China warns Taiwan independence actions will face stronger measures, citing new sanctions and rejecting DPP leader's policies as futile.
On January 14, 2026, a Chinese mainland spokesperson, Zhu Fenglian, warned that escalating "Taiwan independence" activities would trigger stronger measures to prevent secession, reiterating Taiwan's status as part of China and stating that those promoting separation face legal consequences and lifelong accountability.
The remarks followed the addition of two individuals to Beijing's list of hardline "Taiwan independence" figures.
Zhu criticized 17 strategies by Taiwan's DPP leader Lai Ching-te as contrary to public desires for peace and cross-Strait cooperation, calling them attempts to incite fear and advance separatism—efforts she said are doomed to fail.
She dismissed Lai’s criticisms of the mainland as election-driven political tactics unlikely to deceive Taiwan’s people.
