A Chilean immigrant at Florida’s Everglades detention facility agreed to voluntary removal, ending his lawsuit over detention conditions.
A detained immigrant at the Florida Everglades immigration facility, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” has agreed to voluntary removal and asked that his federal lawsuit be dismissed, his attorneys said.
The man, a Chilean national who entered the U.S. in 2018 and later sought asylum, claimed he was pressured into signing a removal agreement he didn’t understand and suffered health deterioration while detained.
His case was one of three legal challenges against the facility, which opened in July 2025 and is operated by a private contractor under state and federal contracts.
Two other lawsuits remain pending, focusing on legal access and detainee rights.
The facility continues to operate despite prior court orders to close over environmental concerns.
