Uttarakhand has seen a 24-fold rise in daily marriage registrations since implementing its Uniform Civil Code on January 27, 2025, with registrations jumping from 67 to 1,634 per day. Over six months, more than 300,000 marriages were registered, surpassing the total under the previous law. The UCC, aimed at promoting gender equality and uniformity in personal laws, sets a common marriage age, bans polygamy and halala, and standardizes divorce and inheritance. Officials say the law has strengthened women’s legal rights and encouraged formal marriage registration.
