A UK court blocked chef James Martin’s trademark for beverages, citing confusion with a longstanding whisky brand.
A UK court has denied celebrity chef James Martin's bid to trademark his name for beverages, ruling that his use would cause consumer confusion with The Glenmorangie Company’s long-standing James Martin’s whisky brand, first registered in 1998 and produced since 1878.
The decision, issued December 22, 2025, cited evidence of ongoing distribution, including 11,382 bottles exported to Portugal between 2020 and 2022.
Martin, who applied in July 2022, was ordered to pay £1,900 in legal fees.
The Glenmorangie Company welcomed the ruling, affirming the heritage and continued presence of its brand.
