Sixteen-year-old Rewi Te Kani-Nankivell is returning to Gisborne’s Campion College for his final year as a prefect and student trustee representative, nearly two years after a 2024 car accident left him paralyzed from the chest down and took the life of his mother, Midge Te Kani.
After five months of recovery in Auckland, including ICU and spinal rehabilitation, he has regained some hand mobility through nerve surgery and continues strength training.
Supported by his family, school, and community, including a successful fundraiser, Rewi is focused on independence, education, and advocating for others with similar injuries, hopeful for future medical advancements.
