A $182 million settlement ends an 11-year legal fight over the 2015 Valhalla train crash that killed six, with Metro-North found mostly liable.
A $182 million settlement has resolved a nearly 11-year legal battle over the 2015 Valhalla train crash that killed six people when an SUV became stuck on tracks and was struck by a Metro-North train during rush hour.
The settlement, reached in early 2026, allocates funds primarily to the families of five passengers and the SUV driver, with one passenger’s family receiving about $79 million.
A 2024 jury found Metro-North 71% liable for passenger deaths and 63% liable for the driver’s death, citing failures in safety oversight and third rail management.
The train, traveling at about 50 mph, collided with the SUV after emergency brakes were applied seconds before impact, triggering a fire that severed the third rail.
Plaintiffs’ attorneys criticized the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for delays, noting unresolved safety concerns.
Metro-North said it has continued safety improvements nationwide.
