Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist ends gubernatorial run, now seeks secretary of state.
Michigan Lt. Gov.
Garlin Gilchrist II has ended his gubernatorial campaign and is now running for secretary of state, a key election oversight role in the battleground state.
The progressive Detroit Democrat cited no specific reason for the shift but emphasized his ongoing commitment to public service.
His departure clears the Democratic primary for incumbent Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who will face only Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in August.
Gilchrist will compete against four other Democrats—Barb Byrum, Aghogho Edevbie, Suzanna Shkreli, and Adam Hollier—for the party’s nomination at the April 19 convention, as Michigan does not hold primaries for secretary of state.
The Republican nominee will be chosen at a March 28 convention.
Voters will also elect a new governor, attorney general, and U.S. senator in November.
