25% of Medicare dementia patients still get high-risk brain drugs with no clear reason, study finds.
Despite known risks, about 25% of Medicare beneficiaries with dementia in the U.S. continue to be prescribed high-risk central nervous system medications like antipsychotics and benzodiazepines, according to a study of Medicare claims from 2013 to 2021.
While overall prescribing rates for these drugs declined slightly, over two-thirds of dementia patients receiving them had no documented clinical justification.
Older adults with cognitive impairment but no dementia also had high prescription rates.
Researchers stress the need for improved prescribing practices and safer alternatives.
