Kansas City police debuted new navy blue uniforms in Jan. 2026, replacing 1984-era gear with lighter, more functional attire.
Starting January 12, 2026, Kansas City police officers began wearing new navy blue uniforms made from lightweight, stretchable, and durable materials, replacing the French blue uniforms used since 1984.
The change, driven by outdated fabric availability and improved functionality, offers better breathability, fluid resistance, and UV protection.
Each officer wears a sleeve patch with “KANSAS CITY” and 1874, featuring a French blue interior to honor the department’s history.
The upgrade, part of a $1.75 million initiative over two years, includes new vests and outerwear, with each uniform costing about $80 less than the previous version.
Police Chief Stacey Graves highlighted the change as a step toward modernization, improved officer performance, and cost efficiency, aligning with community expectations and long-term sustainability.
