Himachal Pradesh warns of farmer unrest over lower NZ apple duties and inadequate government support.
Himachal Pradesh officials, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, held a high-level meeting amid fears that reduced import duties on New Zealand apples—cut from 50% to 25% under a new Free Trade Agreement—could flood India’s market during peak harvest season, threatening local farmers in Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and northeastern states.
The state criticized the central government for slashing its share under the Market Intervention Scheme to just Rs 1 lakh despite procuring nearly 98,000 metric tonnes of apples, forcing Himachal to absorb a Rs 140 crore loss.
Officials warned that similar duty cuts with the U.S. could further harm hill-state agriculture and pledged to demand a rollback of the New Zealand agreement and protection for farmers, warning of potential agitation if action isn’t taken.
