A former U.S. Navy sailor was sentenced to 16 years for spying for China, selling ship secrets from 2022 to 2023.
Jinchao Wei, a 25-year-old former U.S. Navy sailor from San Diego, was sentenced to 200 months—just over 16 years—in prison for espionage after selling sensitive technical and operational information about Navy ships, including the USS Essex, to a Chinese intelligence officer.
Prosecutors said Wei, a petty officer second class and engineer aboard the Essex, provided over 60 manuals, photos, videos, and details on ship locations and defensive systems between 2022 and 2023, receiving more than $12,000 in payments.
He was recruited via social media by an individual posing as a naval enthusiast linked to a state-owned Chinese shipbuilding company.
Despite recognizing the contact as suspicious and being advised to end communication, Wei continued using encrypted messaging apps to transfer classified data.
The case reflects growing U.S. concerns about foreign intelligence efforts, particularly from China, to obtain military secrets through human sources.
His co-defendant, Wenheng Zhao, pleaded guilty and received a shorter sentence.
Wei expressed remorse in a letter, citing loneliness and introversion as contributing factors.
