A former Russian teacher is accused by BBC of recruiting foreign men for Ukraine war, promising jobs and citizenship, but sending them to front lines with little training.
A BBC investigation reveals that Polina Azarnykh, a 40-year-old former Russian teacher, used a Telegram channel to recruit foreign men—mainly from Syria, Egypt, and Yemen—into Russia’s military for the war in Ukraine, promising jobs, citizenship, and non-combat roles.
Recruits say they were misled, sent to the front lines with little training, and pressured to pay $3,000 to avoid combat, with some threatened or blackmailed.
The BBC identified nearly 500 cases tied to her, and twelve families say their relatives are dead or missing.
Russia, facing over one million casualties since 2022 and 25,000 killed in December 2025 alone, has expanded conscription and recruited foreign fighters, with estimates suggesting at least 20,000 from countries including Cuba, Nepal, and North Korea have joined.
Azarnykh denies the allegations.
