Air India has received its first custom-built Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered VT-AWA, at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after a 16-hour non-stop flight from Boeing’s Everett factory.
The aircraft, featuring 296 seats across three classes and bespoke interiors, marks a key milestone in the airline’s 2026 fleet modernization.
It will begin international long-haul service in February 2026, joining six new widebody aircraft planned this year.
Air India is also retrofitting 26 older 787-8s with updated cabins and livery, aiming for nearly 60% of its widebody fleet to have modern interiors by year-end.
The delivery supports the airline’s broader goal of enhancing global competitiveness and passenger experience under Tata Group ownership.
