Sri Lanka orders urgent repair of cyclone-damaged elephant fences to reduce deadly human-elephant conflicts.
Sri Lanka has mandated the urgent repair of elephant fences damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, requiring completion within one week.
Environment Minister Dammika Patabendi issued the order after the storm caused widespread destruction, worsening human-elephant conflict (HEC).
Official data shows HEC led to 438 elephant and 158 human deaths in 2025.
The government also launched a housing reconstruction program, beginning in Anuradhapura and Kurunegala, aiming to rebuild 20,000 to 25,000 homes damaged or destroyed by the cyclone, with support from India for hill-country communities.
A full damage assessment is pending.
