Romania backed the EU-Mercosur trade deal, securing safeguards to limit beef and poultry imports and protect domestic farmers, while gaining access to new markets for automotive, machinery, and textile exports. The agreement, supported by President Nicusor Dan, aims to boost Romania’s economy, with up to €45 billion in EU agricultural funding available. Despite opposition from the PSD over concerns about unfair competition and lower standards, the government maintains the deal balances growth with protection, citing strong economic performance and strategic benefits.
