Notre Dame denies coach Marcus Freeman assaulted a wrestler’s coach; police investigated but no charges expected.
Notre Dame has denied allegations that head football coach Marcus Freeman physically assaulted a high school wrestling coach during a January 3 tournament where his son competed. The university stated Freeman and his wife intervened after their son was verbally confronted, asserting he never engaged physically and citing video evidence supporting their account. The Mishawaka Police Department completed its investigation and forwarded the case to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, though a Notre Dame source said Freeman is not expected to face charges. The incident occurred in a hallway after a match, involving a verbal exchange and shouting match before law enforcement intervened. Freeman, who has a 43-12 record since joining Notre Dame in 2021, led the team to a College Football Playoff National Championship appearance in 2024 and a 10-2 season in 2025.
