A New Zealand man convicted of fraud against elderly victims, including a 93-year-old, was denied a discharge without conviction despite his career concerns.
A 21-year-old Auckland man, Aaron Robie, has been denied a discharge without conviction after being found guilty of fraud involving elderly victims, including a 93-year-old woman.
Robie, part of a group that stole nearly $400,000, personally withdrew $799 from the 93-year-old’s account and was involved in $11,096 in total fraud.
He argued a conviction would harm his engineering career, but High Court Justice Pheroze Jagose upheld the original sentence of nine months’ supervision and $5,032 in reparation, stating a conviction is a fair benchmark for rehabilitation and that Robie showed no remorse or effort to repay victims despite multiple chances to question the activity.
