Kenya’s parliament begins inquiry into government’s plan to sell 15% of Safaricom to Vodacom for $300 million.
Kenya’s Parliament has begun a nine-day inquiry into the government’s plan to sell a 15% stake in Safaricom to Vodacom for Sh40.2 billion, with hearings running from January 12 to 21, 2026.
The sale, priced at Sh34 per share—a 17% premium over Safaricom’s six-month average—would reduce the government’s stake to 20% and raise concerns over transparency, undervaluation, and loss of strategic control, particularly regarding M-Pesa.
Over 40 stakeholders, including civil society and labor groups, are testifying.
The process, led by two parliamentary committees, will assess the deal’s economic and governance implications ahead of regulatory approvals.
