India and Germany partner to develop hydrogen standards for India’s gas network, supporting green energy goals.
India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has signed a non-binding MoU with Germany’s DVGW to advance hydrogen integration into India’s natural gas infrastructure.
The agreement, signed during a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Friedrich Merz, focuses on developing technical standards, testing frameworks, and safety protocols for hydrogen blending—initially up to 20%—and future 100% hydrogen use.
Key activities include adapting German technical rules for Indian conditions, creating a Hydrogen Readiness Testing Scheme, certification for hydrogen-ready components, and sharing expertise on safety, odorization, and leak detection.
The partnership supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and PNGRB’s efforts to amend the PNGRB Act, 2006, to include hydrogen transportation.
Implementation will depend on detailed workplans, cost-sharing, and adaptation to local conditions.
