EU pushes for 100,000-member army and security council amid U.S. reliability concerns.
EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius has urged the bloc to consider creating a 100,000-member standing military force and a European Security Council to boost defense autonomy amid concerns over U.S. reliability, particularly under President Donald Trump.
Speaking in Sweden, he highlighted the need for faster, unified decision-making to counter threats like Russia’s war in Ukraine and shifting U.S. priorities, including a focus on China.
The proposed council would include permanent and rotating members, possibly including the UK, to coordinate defense policy.
While past efforts have stalled due to sovereignty concerns, rising defense spending and geopolitical tensions have renewed momentum for deeper European defense integration.
