Domestic abuse calls in Northern Ireland rose during the holidays, peaking on New Year’s Day, authorities say.
Police in Northern Ireland reported 1,407 domestic abuse calls from December 20 to January 2, a rise from 1,290 the previous year, with New Year’s Day seeing the highest volume at 116 calls.
Authorities attribute the increase to holiday stressors like financial pressure, alcohol use, and prolonged family time.
Detective Superintendent Kerry Brennan stressed that abuse does not pause during holidays and that 24/7 support remains available via emergency services, non-emergency lines, and the Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline.
