Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell is retiring after 40 years with the NSW Police Force, concluding a career marked by leadership in criminal investigation, emergency management, and regional and metropolitan operations. He co-led Strike Force Durkin in 2012, resulting in the capture of fugitive Malcolm Naden and earning a Commissioner’s Commendation. Thurtell served as State Emergency Operations Controller, oversaw pandemic responses, and held key roles including Deputy Commissioner, Metropolitan Field Operations. He remained connected to the Mid North Coast, attending memorial events for fallen officers. Commissioner Mal Lanyon praised his integrity and impact. A farewell ceremony is set for February 13, 2026, at Sydney Police Centre, with a recruitment process underway for his successor.
