Chinese scientists map upland cotton’s genetics, boosting disease resistance and breeding precision.
Chinese scientists have developed the most detailed genetic map of upland cotton, identifying 69 genetic loci linked to key traits like fiber quality, yield, and disease resistance, including a newly discovered region, VWD11, that confers resistance to Verticillium wilt.
Using a "super pangenome" from 107 varieties, the study reveals upland cotton originated from a narrow lineage in Central America, underwent a three-stage domestication process starting in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, and gained adaptive advantages through ancient hybridization.
The findings enable precise, targeted breeding, advancing sustainable cotton production and strengthening China’s position as the world’s top cotton producer and consumer, with global implications for agricultural resilience and textile supply security.
