Alberta keeps AISH, launches ADAP in July with lower payments but fewer work penalties.
Alberta will not cut disability benefits, with its new Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP) launching in July without replacing the existing AISH program.
Minister Jason Nixon confirmed ADAP will offer lower monthly payments but fewer income clawbacks to encourage work.
A medical review panel of qualified professionals, not government staff, will assess applications, with details to come.
Despite AISH’s maximum $1,940 monthly payment falling below the poverty line, Nixon stated Alberta spends $3.6 billion annually on disability support—the highest in Canada—plus tax-free benefits, subsidized housing, and medical programs that collectively lift recipients above poverty when combined.
No new legislation is planned, but regulations will be released soon.
