A U.S. label threatens lawsuit over Trinidad’s PNM using "Liff Up" in elections without permission.
A U.S. record label, VAS Productions LLC, has threatened legal action against Trinidad and Tobago’s People’s National Movement over the unauthorized use of the song "Liff Up" in campaign materials ahead of the Tobago House of Assembly elections.
The label, which owns the copyright, claims the song was used in social media posts and rallies without a license, with the melody remaining substantially unchanged.
A cease-and-desist letter sent January 7 went unanswered, prompting the threat of court action.
While a PNM candidate said the song would no longer be used in official events, the party has not denied the allegations or confirmed receipt of the letter.
This follows a prior incident in 2020 when another Prince Swanny song was used in a political campaign.
