Ugandan teen Marta Alemayo won back-to-back U20 world cross country titles, leading Uganda to its first team gold since 1989.
Marta Alemayo of Uganda won the U20 women’s 6km race at the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, defending her title in 18:52 and becoming the fifth woman to win back-to-back U20 world titles.
She led from the start, finishing 26 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Wosane Asefa, with Uganda’s Charity Cherop taking bronze.
The victory marked Uganda’s first team gold in the U20 race since 1989.
In the senior women’s 10km, Kenya’s Agnes Ng’etich won her first global title in 31:28, leading from start to finish and securing Kenya’s 10th consecutive senior women’s team title.
Joy Cheptoyek of Uganda earned silver, becoming her nation’s first senior individual medallist, while Ethiopia’s Senayet Getachew took bronze.
Kenya’s dominance continued across age groups, with Hellen Kibet leading the U20 team.
Beatrice Chebet, the previous two-time champion, did not compete, opting to start a family.
