Taiwan's new Marine unit swapped T65K2 rifles for U.S. M4A1s amid growing security concerns.
A newly established Marine Corps unit in Taiwan, the First Security Battalion, has replaced its T65K2 rifles with U.S.-made M4A1 assault rifles, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The battalion, formed in November 2024, secures mobile missile and radar units and is composed mainly of conscripts.
The M4A1s, likely acquired through U.S. Foreign Military Financing under the Biden administration, offer better handling and modular attachments via a Picatinny rail system.
A second battalion is expected by late 2026.
Meanwhile, Taiwan is expanding domestic ammunition production and diversifying supply chains amid security concerns.
