Pope Leo XIV urges cardinals to listen to abuse survivors, stressing healing through empathy and openness.
Pope Leo XIV, who became pope in May 2025, urged cardinals to listen to victims of clerical sex abuse during a closing speech at a January 2026 consistory, calling the abuse of children and vulnerable adults a lasting wound in the Church.
Though not a formal agenda item, he emphasized that ignoring survivors deepens their pain and damages the Church’s credibility, citing a recent account of a victim dismissed by bishops.
He called for a culture of listening and empathy, stressing that openness is essential to healing.
The Vatican also announced plans for annual consistory gatherings starting in June 2026.
