Gregg McCarron, a jockey with over 2,400 wins and a key mentor to Hall of Fame rider Chris McCarron, died at 77 from a heart attack on January 8 at his farm in Mount Airy, Maryland.
He raced from 1969 to 1993, competing in 20,595 races primarily in New England, New York, and Maryland, and won 29 graded stakes, including the Jockey Club Gold Cup and Alabama Stakes.
After retiring, he became a racing commentator for NBC Sports.
He is survived by his wife Darlene, son Matt, and grandson Trevor.
