An elderly woman in Cambridgeshire lost £8,000 to a phone scam in which a fraudster impersonating a police officer convinced her to withdraw cash and leave it under her wheelie bin for collection.
The scammer, calling from a withheld number and claiming to be a detective, said her bank account was compromised and that bank staff were leaking information.
Believing the call was legitimate, the woman withdrew £5,000 and £3,000 from two accounts and placed the money in an envelope under her bin.
A family member later reported the incident after becoming suspicious.
Cambridgeshire Police confirmed the case is under investigation and noted a rise in courier fraud scams where victims are instructed to leave money in concealed locations.
The victim has been visited at home and is receiving support.
Authorities continue to warn the public about evolving fraud tactics involving impersonation of law enforcement.
