Brazil ends 20-year soy deforestation moratorium, risking Amazon protection goals.
Brazil’s soy industry, represented by ABIOVE, has ended its 20-year voluntary moratorium on purchasing soy grown on Amazon land cleared after July 2008, citing the loss of tax incentives in Mato Grosso.
The move, effective January 1, 2026, undermines efforts to curb deforestation, as the agreement had helped reduce forest loss by 69% between 2009 and 2022 despite rising soy production.
While companies still face legal penalties for buying soy from illegally deforested land, environmentalists warn the withdrawal weakens safeguards and threatens President Lula’s 2030 pledge to end Amazon deforestation.
