The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is reviewing refuges and hatcheries for potential closures or sales amid a push to align them with its mission.
The U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service is reviewing hundreds of national wildlife refuges and fish hatcheries to identify sites no longer aligned with its mission, following a December 16 directive from Director Brian Nesvik.
Led by Joshua Coursey and Acting Deputy Director David Miko, the review aims to improve efficiency, governance, and collaboration with state and tribal agencies.
An initial summary was due January 5, with a detailed report expected by February 15.
Critics, including conservation groups, have raised concerns about the tight three-week timeline during the holidays, fearing it may compromise thoroughness and could lead to closures or sales of refuges, many of which offer public access and protect vital habitats.
The agency has not responded to requests for comment but is accepting input.
The review is part of broader administration efforts to reevaluate federal land management, including the recent rescission of the 2014 Refuge System Strategic Growth Policy, which previously guided refuge expansions.
