Two RCMP officers shot and killed a Tla-o-qui-aht woman in 2021; an investigation found their use of force justified.
The B.C.
Independent Investigations Office has cleared two RCMP officers who shot a Tla-o-qui-aht woman in Ucluelet in May 2021, concluding their use of lethal force was justified.
Officers responded to a disturbance call, arrested a man, then found the woman, on conditional release and reportedly intoxicated, holding a realistic-looking BB gun replica.
When she refused orders to drop it and moved through the home, officers fired, striking her multiple times.
A replica gun matching her DNA was found nearby.
The IIO determined the officers reasonably believed they faced imminent serious harm due to her status, intoxication, and the weapon’s appearance, and found their actions lawful, recommending no criminal charges.
