A top Colombian FARC dissident leader urges unity among leftist rebel groups against perceived U.S. intervention, ahead of a high-stakes Colombia-U.S. summit.
A leader of a major Colombian FARC dissident group, known as “Ivan Mordisco,” has called for unity among several leftist rebel factions, including the ELN and Second Marquetalia, in response to perceived U.S. interventionism following a U.S. incursion into Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro.
The appeal, confirmed authentic, urges shared resistance against foreign influence and does not include the Central General Staff, a rival FARC splinter group.
The combined groups, numbering over 11,000, are primarily involved in drug trafficking and illegal gold mining.
The move comes ahead of a planned February meeting between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and U.S. President Donald Trump, amid Trump’s threats against Colombia and accusations of drug trafficking, which the Colombian government denies.
Colombian defense officials suggest the unity push may be a tactic to avoid military targeting.
