Tom Cherones, Emmy-winning director of early "Seinfeld" episodes, died at 86 from Alzheimer’s.
Tom Cherones, the Emmy-winning director who guided 81 of the first 86 episodes of “Seinfeld” and 23 episodes of “Ellen,” has died at 86 in Florence, Oregon, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He began his career in television production and made his directing debut in 1986.
Cherones played a key role in shaping “Seinfeld’s” early tone, earning a DGA Award for directing “The Contest” in 1993.
He later directed episodes of several other TV shows and taught television production at the University of Alabama from 2002 to 2014.
He is survived by his wife Carol, children Susan and Scott, their spouses, and grandchildren Jessa and Thomas.
