Rep. Nancy Mace proposes fines up to $10,000 per undocumented worker for South Carolina employers who hire them, aiming to strengthen enforcement.
Rep. Nancy Mace has introduced the South Carolina Employer Immigration Compliance Act, proposing daily fines of $1,000 per undocumented worker for employers who knowingly hire them, with penalties increasing to $5,000 and $10,000 for repeat offenses.
The bill would also impose license suspensions, ban violators from state incentives for five years, mandate annual audits, and create a public complaint hotline.
Mace said weak enforcement of South Carolina’s 2012 E-Verify requirement has allowed illegal hiring to persist, undermining wages and fair competition.
The legislation is set for formal filing when the state legislature reconvenes on January 13.
