Oregon extends homelessness emergency for another year to address rising numbers and fund housing and treatment.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has extended the state’s homelessness emergency for another year, citing rising homelessness in Portland, Eugene, and other regions, with a 61% increase in the Portland metro area since 2023.
The move supports efforts to create over 6,250 shelter beds, house more than 5,500 people, and prevent nearly 26,000 households from becoming homeless.
The state will invest $20 million in permanent supportive housing and $19 million in mental health and substance use treatment, including services for individuals in the justice system.
The emergency declaration, set to expire January 10, 2027, will be reviewed every few months.
