Montreal’s Olympic Stadium began a $870 million roof renovation in 2026, aiming to complete it by 2028.
Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, still lacking a roof 50 years after its 1976 opening, began 2026 under construction again as part of an $870 million renovation to replace its damaged roof, with additional funds for sound and electrical upgrades.
The new non-retractable, translucent roof, designed to last 50 years and allow year-round use, is being built in segments and lifted into place using the stadium’s 165-meter inclined tower.
Officials say the project is on time and on budget, a contrast to past failures, including a 1998 roof that collapsed under snow.
Despite criticism of the stadium’s impractical design and ongoing maintenance costs, leaders say the upgrades will boost revenue and preserve the iconic structure, though economists remain skeptical about long-term financial returns from public stadium investments.
Work is expected to finish by 2028.
