Irungu Houghton resigned from Kenya’s protest victims panel on Jan. 9, 2026, over a court ruling declaring it unconstitutional and a presidential extension violating judicial authority.
Irungu Houghton, executive director of Amnesty International Kenya, resigned from the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests on January 9, 2026, citing a Kenyan High Court ruling in December 2025 that declared the panel unconstitutional.
He stated President William Ruto’s January 5, 2026, extension of the panel’s mandate by 180 days violated the court’s decision and undermined judicial authority and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights’ role.
Houghton, who had suspended participation in September 2025, denied involvement in a December 15 application to stay the ruling, calling it erroneous.
His resignation follows a similar move by Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo in October 2025 over institutional independence concerns.
Irungu Houghton renunció al panel de víctimas de protestas de Kenia el 9 de enero de 2026, por un fallo judicial que lo declaraba inconstitucional y una extensión presidencial que violaba la autoridad judicial.
