Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a three-year national campaign on January 9, 2026, to combat drug abuse and trafficking, declaring it a national security threat linked to narco-terrorism.
At the 9th apex meeting of the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD), he directed all government departments to create detailed roadmaps by March 31, focusing on dismantling drug networks, reducing demand, and expanding rehabilitation and awareness efforts.
The plan includes AI-enhanced task forces, improved forensic capacity, faster convictions, and the establishment of district-level rehabilitation centers.
Shah also inaugurated a new NCB office in Amritsar and emphasized accountability, real-world outcomes, and inter-agency coordination to achieve a 'Drug-Free India' by 2029.
