Ethiopia starts construction on $12.5B Bishoftu Airport, Africa’s future largest aviation hub, set for 2030.
Ethiopia has begun construction on Bishoftu International Airport, a $12.5 billion project set to become Africa’s largest aviation hub by 2030.
Located 45 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, the four-runway airport will handle up to 110 million passengers annually—more than four times the current capacity of Bole International Airport.
Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, will fund 30% of the project and has secured the design contract.
The African Development Bank has committed $500 million, with the rest to be financed by international lenders from the Middle East, Europe, China, and the U.S. Earthworks are already underway, with $610 million allocated and completion expected within a year, followed by main construction starting in August 2026.
The airport will include a high-speed rail link and motorway, and the project has displaced 2,500 farmers, who were relocated at a cost of $350 million.
