Algerian man, wrongly released in 2023, pleads guilty to burglary and carrying a knife in 2024.
A 24-year-old Algerian man, Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, wrongfully released from UK prison in October 2023 due to a bureaucratic error, has pleaded guilty to burglary and carrying a knife.
He admitted to breaking into a garage in January 2024 and carrying a knife in November 2023, leading to his arrest days later in Finsbury Park.
The error came to light when a court could not establish a videolink for a hearing.
Kaddour-Cherif, a convicted sex offender since 2024 for indecent exposure, had overstayed his visa since 2020 and was previously detained for deportation.
His case has drawn national attention amid rising concerns over prison release errors, with 262 such incidents reported in the UK between March 2024 and March 2025—a 128% increase from the prior year.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on January 27 for the two crimes and separately for missing a court hearing.
