Singapore expands Wolbachia mosquito program to four new areas in late January 2026 to reduce dengue risk.
Singapore will expand its Project Wolbachia anti-dengue program to four new areas—Balestier-Whampoa, Geylang, Moulmein-Dorset, and Pasir Ris—starting late January 2026, releasing male mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia to reduce Aedes aegypti populations.
The initiative, launched in 2016, has cut dengue risk by over 70% and mosquito numbers by 80% to 90% in targeted zones, with residents near release sites 45% less likely to contract dengue.
The expansion will cover 740,000 households, with a goal of reaching 800,000 by end-2026.
Officials stress the program’s effectiveness relies on combining mosquito releases with ongoing community efforts to eliminate breeding sites.
