Ontario receives first Northlander trainset, restarting Toronto-to-north rail service after 14 years.
Ontario has received the first of three new Northlander trainsets, a key step in restoring passenger rail service between Toronto and northern communities like Timmins and Cochrane, ending a 14-year gap since the route was replaced by buses in 2012.
The 740-kilometre route will include 16 stops and take 10 to 11 hours, with trains featuring Wi-Fi, charging ports, accessible seating, and washrooms.
Testing begins in Toronto before northern trials, while infrastructure upgrades, including the North Bay Rail Bypass and new stations, are underway.
The service is set to launch later in 2026, aiming to boost access to jobs, education, and healthcare, with projected annual ridership of 40,000 to 60,000 by 2041.
