Man arrested for stealing and hoarding over 100 human remains from cemeteries.
Jonathan Gerlach, 34, of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, has been arrested and charged with over 500 crimes, including burglary, theft, criminal trespass, and abuse of corpses, after authorities discovered more than 100 human skeletal remains—some over 200 years old, others from recent months—in his home and a storage unit.
The remains, found following his arrest at Mount Moriah Cemetery with a bag containing bones and skulls, were arranged in disturbing ways, including on shelves and partially assembled.
Investigators believe Gerlach stole remains from multiple cemeteries since Halloween, and a Facebook group linked to human remains trading was associated with him, though it’s unclear if any were sold.
The case, described by prosecutors as a "horror movie come to life," remains under investigation, with efforts underway to identify the remains and notify families.
Gerlach is held on $1 million bail.
