Kerala approves plan to lighten school bags, end back-row seating, and delay Class 1 entry beyond age 6.
Kerala has approved a draft plan to reduce school bag weight and eliminate the practice of seating students in back rows, aiming to create more inclusive and child-friendly classrooms.
The State Curriculum Steering Committee, led by Education Minister V Sivankutty, endorsed the proposal developed by SCERT, which seeks to improve students’ physical and mental well-being and promote active participation.
Public feedback on the draft is being accepted until January 20, 2026, with implementation planned for the next academic year.
The state remains one of six—alongside Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and Chhattisgarh—that have not adopted the national six-year minimum age for Class 1 admission, as required by NEP 2020 and the RTE Act.
