On January 9, 2026, thousands of European oysters—2,000 adults and over 30,000 juveniles—were planted in Belfast Lough to restore a native population that disappeared over a century ago due to overfishing, pollution, and habitat loss.
Led by Ulster Wildlife, the project, supported by Belfast Harbour, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, and local groups, marks Northern Ireland’s first large-scale oyster reef restoration.
The oysters, sourced from Scotland and raised in protected nurseries, are expected to improve water quality by filtering up to 200 liters per day and support marine biodiversity.
Monitoring will track survival and growth, with future expansion planned.
