Hamtramck, Michigan, renamed a street after Bangladesh’s first female PM, Khaleda Zia, honoring her democratic legacy.
Hamtramck, Michigan, a city with a large Bangladeshi immigrant population and the first U.S. city with a Muslim-majority city council, has renamed a section of Carpenter Street to Khaleda Zia Street in honor of the late former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who died on December 30, 2025.
The decision, approved by the city council and led by four Bangladeshi-origin council members, recognizes Zia as Bangladesh’s first female prime minister and a key figure in restoring democracy.
The gesture reflects the community’s cultural influence and pays tribute to her legacy, following a similar street naming in Chicago for her late husband.
