Former Premier League referee David Coote got a 9-month suspended sentence for possessing a child sexual abuse image, linked to a 2020 viral rant.
Former Premier League referee David Coote was sentenced to a nine-month suspended prison term after admitting to making a Category A indecent image of a child, the most serious classification under UK law.
The two-minute video, showing a 15-year-old boy in a school uniform, was discovered on his laptop during a police investigation in February 2025, prompted by a viral 2020 video in which Coote made offensive remarks about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.
Coote, 43, had already been dismissed by the Football Association and banned by UEFA following that incident and allegations of cocaine use during Euro 2024.
The court heard his actions caused real harm to the child, though his mental health struggles and loneliness were noted as contributing factors.
He was placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years, ordered to complete 150 hours of community work, and given a sexual harm prevention order restricting his internet use and contact with minors.
The suspended sentence means he will avoid jail only if he does not commit another offense within two years.
