As the most senior apostle not serving in the First Presidency, Uchtdorf assumes the role due to Henry B. Eyring’s position as first counselor in the First Presidency.
The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is the church’s second-highest governing body, responsible for global leadership and serving as special witnesses of Christ.
The appointment was formally set apart by Dallin H. Oaks.
